Breaking Up the Party
The folks at A Bag Full of Health and Politics have a great analysis of the divisive effect on the Democratic party of Hillary's win-at-all-costs tactics. After a recap of the smears and insinuations directed at Obama, we're reminded that the Clintons were never very progressive.
There were, and still are, lingering bitter feelings on the left of the Democratic Party towards the Clintons. This primary season has ripped that scab off, and earned the Clintons the permanent enmity of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party.
People are mad for various reasons. Pro-choice advocates are mad because Senator Clinton has consistently lied about Senator Obama’s strongly pro-choice record. African Americans are mad because they feel like they are being used and taken for granted; this situation will only get worse after the Clintons say “South Carolina doesn’t count because it had a high percentage of black voters.” To the Clintons, I point out that a Democrat must get overwhelming support from the black community to win. Voting rights activists are mad because the Clintons told their Nevada volunteers that aggressive caucus tactics “were not illegal unless they say so.” Younger voters are mad because the Clintons tried to suppress the college vote in Iowa; we’re also mad at the injection of the same old tired arguments and the destruction of an argument we want to hear. And everyone is mad because their dream has been called a “fairy tale” by First Personal Attacker Bill Clinton.
